Purple Sprouting Broccoli

Can anyone tell me the point in Purple Sprouting Broccoli? I do not understand the fuss.Well, until I saw Matron's. We grew this last year as well and got pretty much nothing, zip, zilch, nada. This year looks the same, oh yes there are minisule little sprouts as Andrew tries to point out to placate me but really, all this space, a whole half bed {though I suppose it is one of the only things on the plot over winter} and one of those plants is dead. Oh it makes me wince everytime I see these plants. Is there a point??? What am I not getting here??? I am trying to be patient but I can only take so much!

One of the offending plants.....

On the other hand, a friend has been so inspired by our fabulous Brussel Sprouts at christmas that he is growing his own this year and from what I hear he is very very excited about it all!! hehehe ;)

And we had a delicious pile of Perpetual Spinach in our dinner this week. Yummy! We have been utterly shameful and just ignoring the stuff up til now *blush*. It was so good too.

  1. I've never even heard of purple sprouting broccoli. It does sound a waste of precious gardening space, though, as you point out, not much is going on out there in the winter. :) Beautiful spinach harvest!

  2. We have really rubbish broccoli. Every week I give up on another plant and give it to the chickens.
    It steadfastly refuses to broccle.
    I am not happy.

  3. Sorry I can't as I don't eat it so I don't grow it!
I've always been fascinated by owls so I like your family of them!
Take care, and enjoy the weekend. Flighty xx

  4. After the first attempt with spinach last year..., we don't have to go through the ritual of germination in pots. Spinach seem to sprout babies every time the bed is cleared and loosened. Spinach is truly perpetual! ~bangchik

  5. I know what you mean still waiting for ours, 6 plants and nothing to speak of yet, hope something will happen soon or it's been a bit of a waste and not sure I will try again.

  8. Usually we have a great crop from our PSB and have to keep picking and picking to keep up with it but this year it is really far behind.
